Himachal Pradesh Technical University (HPTU), established by the Government of Himachal Pradesh in the year 2010 under the state legislative Act-16 of 2010 is a leading institution committed to excellence in technical and professional education, research and innovation. Offering undergraduate and post graduate programs in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Computer Applications and Allied Sciences. Nestled in the scenic Shivalik ranges, Himachal Pradesh Technical University (HPTU) at Hamirpur fosters a vibrant environment for learning, creativity, and holistic development. Located in the heart of Himachal Pradesh, Hamirpur—known as Veer Bhoomi for its large contribution to the defence services—is the most literate and well-connected district of the state. Surrounded by Bilaspur, Mandi, Kangra, and Una, the district’s hilly terrain (400–1100 meters) is traversed by the Jakh Dhar and Sola Singhi Dhar ranges. Hamirpur is also home to Sujanpur Tira, a historic town famous for its ancient forts, temples, and cultural heritage, along with the revered Child-Saint Shrine, Baba Balak Nath.
History
Himachal Pradesh Technical University (HPTU), formerly known as HimTU, is a prominent State Technical University located in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. Established under the Himachal Pradesh Technical University Act, 2010 (Act No: 16 of 2010), it received the Governor’s assent on July 28th, 2010 and came into force on Aug 21st, 2010. The creation of HPTU marked a major step forward in advancing technical education in the state, with a mandate to nurture excellence in teaching, research, innovation and professional development across engineering, pharmacy, management and allied disciplines.
Prof. (Dr.) Shashi Kumar Dhiman assumed charge as the founding Vice-Chancellor on January 7th, 2011, laying the foundation for the academic and administrative leadership of the University. During his tenure New Syllabus was implemented. Over the first decade of its functioning, HPTU operated from temporary facilities while building its institutional framework, developing curricula, and affiliating technical colleges across the state.
Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) R.L. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, HPTU became the first University in Himachal Pradesh to implement the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) curriculum and initiated the construction of its permanent campus, marking the beginning of its physical and institutional consolidation.
During the tenure of Prof. (Dr.) S.P. Bansal, Vice Chancellor, University achieved national recognition for successfully implementing the World Bank assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP). Through this initiative this University strengthened infrastructure, faculty development and research capabilities, reflecting HPTU’s commitment to quality technical education. A land mark moment came in Aug, 2020 when HPTU moved to its newly built, state of the art campus at Daruhi village, Hamirpur, Distt: Hamirpur (HP).
In May 2022, Prof. (Dr.) Shashi Kumar Dhiman was reappointed as Vice-Chancellor, marking a renewed phase of growth. Under his visionary leadership. HPTU continue to expand its academic reach, promote research and innovation and strengthen industry partnerships. From the academic session 2023-24, the University became the first in Himachal Pradesh to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aligning its academic structure with contemporary National Education Reforms and priorities.

Hamirpur, located in the heart of Himachal Pradesh, is popularly known as the “Veer Bhumi” due to its rich tradition of valor and service, with a significant number of its youth serving in the Indian Armed Forces.
